Global Ecosystem Response Types Derived from the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index and FPAR3g Series

چکیده
Observing trends in global ecosystem dynamics is an important first step, but attributing these trends to climate variability represents a further step in understanding Earth system changes. In the present study, we classified global Ecosystem Response Types (ERTs) based on common spatio-temporal patterns in time-series of Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and FPAR3g anomalies (1982–2011) by using an extended Principal Component Analysis. The ERTs represent region specific spatio-temporal patterns of ecosystems responding to drought or ecosystems with decreasing severity in drought events as well as ecosystems where drought was not a dominant factor in a 30-year period. Highest explanatory values in the SPEI12-FPAR3g anomalies and strongest SPEI12-FPAR3g correlations were seen in the ERTs of Australia and South America whereas lowest explanatory value and lowest correlations were observed in Asia and North America. These ERTs complement traditional pixel based methods by enabling the combined assessment of the location, timing, duration, frequency and severity of climatic and vegetation anomalies with the joint assessment of wetting and drying climatic conditions. The ERTs produced here thus have potential in supporting global change studies by mapping reference conditions of long term ecosystem changes. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2014, 6 4267

A Multiscalar Drought Index Sensitive to Global Warming: The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index
The authors propose a new climatic drought index: the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The SPEI is based on precipitation and temperature data, and it has the advantage of combining multiscalar character with the capacity to include the effects of temperature variability on drought assessment. The procedure to calculate the index is detailed and involves a climatic wa...
متن کاملAssessing the climate change effects on Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), case study: Latian dam
Studying climate change and its effect on the intensity and frequency of drought can help the proper use of water resources and adaptation to the destructive effects of the drought phenomenon in the future decades. In recent decades, rising global temperatures have disturbed the planetchr('39')s climate balance and caused widespread climate change in most parts of the world. This research trie...
متن کاملEvaluation of rangeland gross primary productivity sensitivity potential to drought using ecosystem modelling
Gross primary productivity is one of the most important factors in the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. With global warming increase, the frequent drought events and the specific response of regional vegetation to these changes, it is essential to identify and quantify the relationships between climatic and GPP data in arid region. In this study, the responses of gross primary productivi...

Drought is a concept that is generally understood on a basic level, but is difficult to quantify. Palmer defined a drought as a meteorological phenomenon that is characterized by ‘‘prolonged and abnormal moisture deficiency. A drought can alternatively be broadly defined as a temporary, recurring reduction in the precipitation in an area. Aridity and drought are not synonymous. A...
متن کاملClimatic changes in yield index and soil water deficit trends in China
Long-term trends of the combined effects of evapotranspiration and precipitation effect surface hydrology and soil water and consequently natural and agricultural ecosystems. This paper analyses yield index and soil water deficit time series derived from water balance calculations for multiple cropping systems with FAO methodology. The analysis shows that yield index values have increased and s...
